Word formation of adjectives An adjective can describe a  person, animal, place, thing  or tell  the number  or  quantity  of the noun. An adjective can be a single word (like exciting, amusing) or a compound(hard-working, self-centered) that actually modifies the noun. The different kinds of adjectives define the noun, verb or sometimes even other adjectives. Suffixes to form adjectives Suffixes go on the end of words. They change a word from one part of speech, such as a noun or a verb, to another, such as an adjective.  For example, if you add ‘ -able’  to ‘ solve’ , you create the adjective ‘ solvable ’ .   They told me the problem was not  solvable , but I thought it was easy. The professional secretary was very  helpful . She immediately understood what I needed. The word ‘ professional’  comes from ‘ profession’ , and ‘ helpful’  comes from ‘ help ’. The most common adjective suffixes a...

ENGLISH GRAMMAR We have already learned a lot and today our final topic - verbs + prepositions. Certain verbs require prepositions in order to connect to their sentences’  objects . These combinations, known as  prepositional verbs , allow the prepositions to act as  necessary links  between verbs and  nouns  or  gerunds . The prepositions used in these combinations are sometimes called  dependent prepositions . Usage Prepositional verbs always take a  direct object  (either a  noun  or  gerund ) after the  preposition  and  cannot be separated  by it. For example:  “He  listens to   classical music  every night.” (Correct — the prepositional verb is not separated, and the object comes directly after the preposition.)   “He  listens   classical music  every night.” (Incorrect — the verb  listens  requires a preposition to connect to its objec...

ENGLISH GRAMMAR Hello, I wanna share with you some grammar topics such as: Modal verbs, Subjunctive mood and verbs + prepositions. Let's start with modal verbs . Modals are different from normal verbs: 1: They don't use an 's' for the third person singular. 2: They make questions by inversion ('she can go' becomes 'can she go?'). 3: They are followed directly by the infinitive of another verb (without 'to'). What can be modal verb and what does it express? Look at the picture. But there are past modal forms. These past modal verbs are all used hypothetically, to talk about things that didn't really happen in the past. 1:  Could have + past participle  means that something was possible in the past, or you had the ability to do something in the past, but that you didn't do it. Example: I could have stayed up late, but I decided to go to bed early. He could have studied harder, but he was too lazy and that's why he failed the exam. Coul...
